Band of the Day

The Frail

Electro-tinged cuts that toe the line between reality and escapism
I tried to hide but the light you gave caught my eye.
lyrics from Back To Me

The Frail started in 2007 through the most unlikely of places -- Craigslist. Looking to make the jump from fan to band, singer Daniel Lannon was looking for like-minded musical collaborators to form what would become one of San Francisco’s most beloved bands The Frail. Defying traditional genre classification, the group’s electro-tinged cuts toe the line between a falsetto homage to Michael Jackson and the hyper-literate electro experimentation of DFA acts like LCD Soundsystem. Through a few lineup changes and EP releases, most notably 2007’s Count on This EP and 2008’s The Firefly EP, The Frail has prevailed. Partnering with longtime friend Izzy Chavarin in 2010 brought a new dynamic and sound to the band, resulting their first release with the current lineup in 2011 with Lasers Over Lovers EP on Tricycle Records. On August 29, 2014 The Frail released their first full length album LoveDeathLegend through Kobalt. The album was recorded at San Francisco’s Different Fur Studios with producer Patrick Brown (Morning Benders, So Many Wizards, Michael Franti) and resulted in a more polished and thoughtful collection of songs. Singer Daniel Lannon says of making the album, “We initially wrote over 25 different pieces of songs maybe even closer to 30 and we ended up cutting a lot until we had 9. I'd never recorded like this before and it was really interesting to piece the songs together that way.” LoveDeathLegend has the upbeat, electro-indie feel that The Frail has become known for, but there is an underlying darker theme to the songs. Lannon says, “When we started working on LoveDeathLegend I had recently lost a few friends. I locked myself in the studio with Patrick Brown and we wanted to do justice musically to all of these friends going through hard times.” LoveDeathLegend is an album that toes the line between the reality of life and the escapism of music. They’ve premiered videos for two new tracks from the album, “You Just Wanna Leave” (on and “Back To Me” (on to critical and fan acclaim. The Frail will be on the road throughout the rest of 2014 supporting LoveDeathLegend on tour. Recently named the best up-and-coming act in San Francisco by Deli Magazine, The Frail has already been featured on MTV, won the viewer’s choice award in Owl Magazine’s “Video Makes The Radio Star” contest, and have opened for Hot Chip, Justice, Moby, Neon Trees, MSTRKRFT, TV on The Radio and Goldfrapp to name a few. The Frail have performed at festivals such as SXSW, Treasure Island, Noise Pop, & BFD. Music by The Frail has been licensed for television series such as The Kardashians, Bad Girls Club, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, 90210, and Road Rules.
