Perth emcee, Coin Banks, will top off an unparalleled 2014 with the release of his highly-anticipated, ‘Tails’ EP, led by its ecstatic new single “Someone”, on Friday 31st October through Inertia Access. The sequel and spiritual counterpart to his acclaimed ‘Heads’ EP (released in March 2014), ‘Tails’ further embodies the style which is quickly establishing Banks as one of hip-hop’s most exciting new voices: fusing the classic with the contemporary to forge a signature sound which proves as effective as it seems effortless.
Cutting his teeth in collectives including The Stoops, Letters To The Sun and UPNUP, Coin Banks first surfaced on most radars in late-2013, with the release of his bone-rattling single, “Hatches”– a collaboration with rising star producer, Ta-ku. With its bass-heavy swagger and assured delivery, the track would start the ripples that would soon transform to waves when follow-up single,“Think Of You”, would drop in February. Marked by guest-verses from Tom Scott and Homeboy Sandman (Stones Throw Records), the pensive, soulful throwback to hip-hop’s purer days would prove Banks’ breakthrough, earning High Rotation on Triple J and fuelling a national tour off the ensuing ‘Heads EP’.
Six months and a string of high-profile shows later (including supports for Illy and BIGSOUND), Banks prepares to unveil the second shining flipside of his stylistic coin. “The premise behind Heads & Tails was to show two versatile sides,” says Banks. “The inspiration came from what I like to listen to, from the Native Tongues movement to its modern day equivalents like Top Dawg Entertainment: music that’s both stylistically original and telling a story. I got in touch with all of my favourite producers and developed a two part release on which I could build a sound.”
No better is this idea demonstrated that on all-new single, “Someone”, which places its heart firmly on its sleeve without ever collapsing into cliché. “It’s an open letter to someone. It is a reminder for people in doubt, that there is someone for everyone.”
Coin Banks will tour the ‘Tails’ EP in early 2015 before retreating to the studio to record his long-awaited debut album.
