Band of the Day

Kung Fu Academy

Funky, full-bodied vintage sound that rekindles the golden era of DIY guitar music
My flashback's in super-8, every frame has a picture of you.
lyrics from Super 8 Flashback

Combining infectious grooving rhythms with lush harmonies and fantastic pop hooks, Kung Fu Academy was formed by four Edinburgh music students randomly put together for a one off performance. The chemistry clear, the band continued beyond this fledging début. Gigging rigorously since their formation in early 2011, the band performed at top venues throughout Glasgow and Scotland’s capital - cementing a reputation as a formidable live act - whilst writing and recording their self-produced début EP "Dirty Honey".

2012 saw the band continue with their relentless work ethic: recording their second EP "Super 8 Flashback" .The rousing six-track record, released via Whimsical Records in 2013, sees the sprightly quartet of Bobby Osborne (vocals/guitar), Laurence Murray (guitar), Duncan Robertson (bass) and Fraser De Banzie (drums) combine infectious funk rhythms with lush harmonies, captivating pop hooks and rollicking classic rock riffs, over the course of 24 riveting minutes . Produced, mixed and engineered by the band, and final mixes and mastering done by Fentek Audio’s Alex Fenton at Swanfield Studios, Super 8 Flashback boasts a clean, crisp and full-bodied vintage sound that rekindles a now-bygone golden era of DIY guitar-music. The funky, dance-floor-friendly title track (also the lead single) goes a long way toward reviving such nostalgia, albeit with a fresh and contemporary edge, thanks to De Banzie’s solid percussion and Robertson’s reflexive, rolling bass-lines underpinning Murray’s retro-filtered guitar licks and Osborne’s impassioned lyrical refrain (“My flashback’s in super-8/Every frame has a picture of you”). Destined to soundtrack countless indie club nights across the country, Super 8 Flashback is a bona fide smash-hit in the waiting .

Touring the UK in support of this release saw the band further refine their stage show, documenting their live proficiency with their "Live In Edinburgh" release in October 2013, which was again met with positive feedback.

2014 sees the band back in the studio preparing their new single "Supernova".
