Elizabeth Rose produces and writes electronic pop songs that are at once bright and moody, layering catchy melodies against shimmering synths and pulsing beats. Her debut EP, Crystallise, arrived last year, establishing her as one of the most exciting new voices in Australian electronic music, and her new self-titled EP delivers on this promise and then some, with richer harmonies, more intricate melodies and a deeper set of sounds and influences. You could compare the sound of these new songs with the colourful pop of Little Dragon or the electronic spookiness of The Knife, but Rose has a sound and style all her own.

The Elizabeth Rose EP contains five bold new songs. Lead single ‘The Good Life’ pairs a soulful and commanding vocal with layers of lustrous synth. There’s a sense of romanticism about ‘The Good Life’, which may sound like a love song, but in fact, it was inspired by Rose’s own recent experiences – moving out of home, finding her own way, and attempting to chase down that elusive ‘good life’ for herself.

The EP marks a progression in song writing for Rose, and a willingness to explore an all-new array of influences. Foremost among these is the RnB music of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. “I grew up loving that sound,” Rose says, “and I just loved writing with that influence in mind.” This is especially apparent on the EP’s stand-out track, ‘Sensibility’, whose lithe and seductive vocal melody harks back to a time when Aaliyah ruled the charts. This track and ‘Is It Love?’ bring out the RnB diva beneath the cool electronic surface of Rose’s music.

The dark duet ‘Only Me Feat. VCS’ is a track Rose knew she wanted a male vocalist to contribute to, but did not know who until she came across Sydney’s VCS – otherwise known as Vinay Seeth, “He has a fantastic, soulful voice,” she says of the musical hook-up, “and he also writes RnB jams, which made him a perfect fit for the song!”

An impressive array of collaborators came in to assist on the EP. Cameron Parkin, who creates smooth and sultry electro tracks as Shazam and has remixed everyone from Muscles to Calvin Harris, co-produced the EP with Rose. Styalz Fuego, another of Australian music’s heavy-hitters, also collaborated with the team in the making of the EP. Fuego, who has worked with everyone from Owl Eyes and The Aston Shuffle to 360, and was recently named ARIA’s Producer of the Year, co-produced some of the tracks. The EP was mastered by Matt Colton (James Blake, Coldplay), of London’s Alchemy Studios.

In her short career, Rose has received a number of accolades in her home country. She won the 2013 SOYA Music Award sponsored by Qantas, and was selected for Triple J’s ‘Next Crop’, a list of upcoming Australian artists who are set to define the sound for the coming year. ‘The Good Life’ recently became the most played song at Alternative Radio in Australia and remained in the top 5 for 4 weeks, also reaching number 20 on the AIR Singles Chart. Earlier this year, she was listed on’s prestigious 25 Under 25: The Young Stars Leading 2013. She has also racked up a list of seriously impressive collaborations. Her debut EP, Crystallise, featured the Sinden collaboration ‘Again’, which was released on Sinden’s own label Grizzly, and most recently Rose lent her vocals to Sydney duo Flight Facilities for their infectious disco track ‘I Didn’t Believe’ which saw an impressive 40K streams in it’s first 40 minutes of release.
