Band of the Day

Teen Runnings

Japanese surf rockers who also hang ten with pop and punk rock influences
I can do anything you want and love you more than he does.
lyrics from Hope You Were Mine

Teen Runnings is a band from Tokyo, Japan that includes members Shota Kaneko (guitar/vox), Masato Watanabe (bass) and Masashi Takahashi (drums). The band's major musical influences go from 60's surf, Psyche, 80's pop, 90's alternative and punk rock. Some of their favorite bands are The Beach Boys, NOFX, Hi-Standard, Pavement, and The Strokes among others.

The band (formerly called Friends) started in May of 2010 when Shota and his younger female friends played songs after he let his younger friends join the band to make new things to inspire friends. Since the others gave up arranging songs, the band is mostly the solo project of Shota.

Teen Runnings’ songs are influenced by what Shota has listened to and experienced in his hometown Kobe, Japan, and in Sydney, Australia where he has been living for 10 months.

In August he played his first gig alone; bassist Masato Watanabe couldn’t attend sound check because he had an exam that day, and drummer Masashi Takahashi couldn't play because the previous day her boyfriend had jumped down from the second floor for some reason.

At the end of August, Shota recorded the first song "We'll Never Stay Together" and uploaded it on Myspace, where it was picked up by foreign blogs and became a hit with listeners in Japan. Since Masashi joined the band in July of 2012, Teen Runnings’ sound went in a more aggressive and punk direction. Masato joined at the end of 2012, which also changed the taste of the band.

The band released their debut cassette EP "Young Days Forever" on November of 2010 through Japanese label called Second Royal Records. This was followed by their debut album "Let's Get Together Again”, released on vinyl in December of 2011, and on CD and digitally in August of 2012 with four new songs and new mix by Jon Greene (Plateaus/ Art Fag Recordings). The band performed at SXSW in 2013 in Austin, Texas.
