Sweet Baboo

Sparkling seafaring melodies and deliciously self-deprecating lyrics crafted by a Welsh solo artist
Daniel Johnston has written hundreds of great tunes and I got six, so I guess I've some catching up to do...
lyrics from If I Died

A native of the North Wales countryside, Sweet Baboo aka Stephen Black is a single minded, idiosyncratic singer possessing an ear for sparkling melody and a gift for a deft lyrical turn – from darkly funny to piercingly tender, twinkling boastful to deliciously self deprecating.

His forth LP and first release for Moshi Moshi Records ‘Ships’ was released to critical acclaim in 2013. After his first ever headline tour of the UK a summer full of festival appearances followed including Glastonbury, Latitude, Festival No 6 and Green Man. The singles lifted from the album ‘Let’s Go Swimming Wild,’ ‘If I Died…’ and ‘C’Mon Lets Mosh’ were all playlisted at BBC 6 Music. After being nominated for the Welsh Music Prize for a second time for 'Ships' Sweet Baboo completed a further tour of the UK in late 2013 to coincide with the 10 track concept EP ‘Motorhome Songs’.

This super strong work ethic is even more impressive when you consider the many collaborations Stephen has undertaken during the years playing with the likes of Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Cate Le Bon, Euros Childs and label mates Slow Club.

Sweet Baboo are currently in the studio working on a new album before heading to SXSW in early 2014.
