A four piece rock ‘n’ roll band from Leeds, UK, China Rats are Graeme, Luke, Jed and George, a band inspired by a love of punk rock and the classic British guitar bands. That is, the very best bands - the ones with the greatest knack at conveying the frustrations and absurdities of their young lives. In these times where - let’s face it - prospects can generally be pretty bad for men in their early 20s, China Rats have an irresistible energy and a turn of self-deprecating, tongue in cheek phrase, lyrics that could only have bubbled up from the North of England. It’s not hard to see why their last hometown show sold out and festival bookers from Texas to Europe have been so quick to sign them up to play. China Rats released the Don’t Play With Fire EP on October 14th. The 5 track EP kicks-off with the swaggeringly brilliant N.O.M.O.N.E.Y, a song that perfectly encapsulates the perennial frustration of empty-pocketed youth and is accompanied by a wonderful stop-motion video fashioned of coins and notes by acclaimed animator Richard Swarbrick. Better known for his animations of Gareth Bale, Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi and his work for Adidas, Google and NBC, Swarbrick has spent the last 15 months making this video in his spare time.
The last year has seen the band play international festivals like SXSW (US), Benicassim (Spain), Les Transmusicales (France), Eurosonic (Holland), Reeperbahn (Germany) amongst other, as well as UK tastemaker festivals like Live at Leeds and The Great Escape. They capped off a brilliant summer with storming sets at Reading Festival and their hometown Leeds festival, this august, and will head out on their first UK headline tour in October, including their first London headline show.
The Don’t Play With Fire EP is available through all usual channels but, in keeping with the sentiment of opening track N.O.M.O.N.E.Y, it will be available on a 'pay what you can' basis through Bandcamp at http://chinarats.bandcamp.com.
